Rule GP2 gives the overarching guidance about how to interpret the Robot Game materials:GP2 - INTERPRETATION
If a detail isn’t mentioned, then it doesn’t matter.
Robot Game text means exactly and only what it plainly says.
If a word isn’t given a game definition, use its common conversational meaning.
Since there's no special meaning given to "above" in the Rules or Missions, it means exactly what you think it should. In theory, 'above" extends from the surface of the mat to the ceiling of the competition area (but only because the referee could not observe a result above the ceiling ;-)

Hi all,
I have so appreciated reading responses to various questions posted on this listserv. It has helped me learn a lot as a rookie coach. So a huge thanks to you more experienced coaches for answering questions so promptly.
My team (BrainSTORM Troopers) has a question regarding the Satellite Orbits Mission (M12). The rules say you get points for any satellite on or above the two outer orbit lines. Does anyone know how “above” is defined? Is there a certain range/distance from above the outer orbit lines we should be staying within?
Thanks in advance for any response!
Take care,
Laura
