Hello

I take a bit of a different approach.  I found that having parents hanging around the pit area became crowded and confusing.  Then also the parents were directing their kid to do things when I was making a different plan.  Thus we ask parents to remain in the gym (robot area).  They are close if needed but not interfering with the kids interacting with the other teams.    The 3 coaches do the wrangling and organizing.  Maybe if you only have 2 coaches, have 1 or 2 particular parents designated to assist.

Good luck and most importantly have fun!!!

It is a good idea to have at least one parent per kid especially since this is the first year. There is a lot of running around to do from place to place for robot runs and judging sessions. Having extra set of hands to get the team time on the practice table, scout out the judging session rooms, keep track of the kids as they roam around to see other teams, pick up lunch, bring snacks, etc., is very helpful. As a coach you will have too many other things to take care of to be doing these things. There are three adults allowed in the judging session so parents can take turns going into the three judging sessions as well.

I've got a first year team that's competing next weekend. I'm trying to get a better feel for the logistics of tournament day. Do kids usually have at least one parent per kid hang out the whole day? It looks like the actual competitions are fairly closed, so parents won't be able to watch much. I guess it's more a question of whether my fellow coach and I want to be responsible for wrangling the team by ourselves all day. What do other people do? Thanks.
