And as pointed out in several earlier emails, it could be part of a team’s strategy to save time by intentionally interrupting the robot outside of home, perhaps to perform an additional mission that is worth more than the loss of a token...

If you string several missions together in your code, of course they can complete them.  Kids are just supposed to avoid touching the robot until it has returned home to begin their next set of code.

So to be clear we have them complete one mission from launch, return to home then they can pick it up, put it back in launch and then run another mission? Is that right?  Can they not complete two missions while out on the field after leaving launch? For example they can't do M06 and M08 then return home?

I agree with Heather's and others comments. I am at a loss for the reasoning behind the changes. There will be many teams that will not be aware of the difference between home and launch.

I find it disheartening that we will penalize teams if they bring the robot back to it original launch location. This would be typical to Industry. I note FLL has already made it a smaller base. So it is already more challenging.

How do we provide feedback to FLL?

I’m sorry but this is ridiculous! Now they lose points for touching the robot in the launch area. This elementary school not Microsoft programming professionals!

Home is the area that is not covered by the mat.  The launch is the gridded section of the mat - you cannot have any part of the robot or attachments over the black line (at least that is our interpretation) when launching.

My team is adjusting their programming today to  end missions in home (since that was not clear to the team).  I know change is inevitable, but this year it has been an extreme challenge for the team to accurately  interpret and understand all the changes in rules.  These are middle schoolers, not adults and even I had to constantly change my interpretation/view when reading other coaches/FLL advisors questions, answers, and comments.

I hope the judges are understanding!

So, I’m confused, where is home and where is launch?

Yes. You may lose points per the new rules. Robots are supposed to start in launch and end in home.

I want to confirm one more time  because this is confusing.

We have mission run where robot starts in launch area and ends up back in the exact same spot in launch area. Kids pick up the robot to run the next mission-  We will lose precision point for this?

The Rules were rewritten for this year's Challenge and several have changed. Rule 27 tells you what you need to know.

27. INTERRUPTION PROCEDURE – If you Interrupt the Robot, stop it instantly, then calmly pick it up for the next Launch.

Where was the Robot Interrupted?
Completely in Home: No problem.
Not Completely in Home: Lose a Precision Token.

Your team may Interrupt the Robot at any time and anywhere on the Field.  When you do interrupt the Robot, bring it to the Launch Area to prepare it to Launch again.

Your team will Lose a Precision Token if the Robot is not completely in Home when you Interrupt it.

Sometimes it's part of the team's strategy to grab the Robot as soon as it make a change out in the Field (maybe to save time and earn more points), and sometimes teams try to keep as many Precision Tokens on the Field as possible. That's your team strategy, and it's something that your team can mention to the Robot Design judges when talking about how your team's strategy relates to your design.

Our team has the same question.  The tournament guide seems to imply that the robot had to return to the home area in between launches.  This would be a change from years in the past when the mat only had a launch area and returned to the launch area each time.

Thanks for your help!
