Upgrades cannot cause bridging, since they aren’t part of a M12 Stack. Only Building Units can cause bridging. 
Only touching matters when making a Stack or bridging in a Stack. 

The pictures show two Stacks, each of height 2,  one color-match in the tan circle, and one Upgrade.

Our team has a doubt about the upgrades placed on a structure. Here in the pictures there are two tan units (each 2 levels high) and an upgrade is placed on one of them. If an upgrade is touching only one structure, but there is overlap with other structure in top view (not touching), are both structures still considered separate and not bridged?
