Elena,
I'd recommend you take one of the online courses that you can find free on coding and take it now. During the summer (after all the spring ball sports have ended) meet with the kids weekly and let them learn how to code and start working with the stuff you bought for last season..building the models and working thru the manuals on creating a project and Core Values.
Spending 6-7 hours on the course now means you are at least 2 steps ahead of the kids come summer. :-) By the end of the summer, some of them will have surpassed your coding abilities, but that's fine, too. ;-)
I just googled and took a course comprised of powerpoint videos created by a couple of college kids who had been on winning LEGO Robotics teams.
