Position OverviewApplications are invited for a three-year research position funded by an ARC Linkage Grant. The salary and level of appointment will be determined on qualifications and experience. Part-time employment (0.8) may be considered.

The project is a response to perceived inadequacies of current poverty and gender-equity indices, such as the UN's Human Development Index and Gender-Related Development Index. The work will be led by philosopher Thomas Pogge, supported by academics with expertise in political science, development and gender studies and economics. Field work will be undertaken in developing countries to inform and test the project's theoretical work.

You should hold a MA or PhD in one of the disciplines relevant to the project and a demonstrated interest in its objectives. Developing-country experience would be an advantage but is not necessary.

Role statement PURPOSE STATEMENT:
The occupant of this position will be a member of a project team that will carry out the day-to-day operations of the ARC Linkage Project Assessing Development: designing better indices of poverty and gender equity, under the oversight of the Project's Chief and Partner Investigators. The occupant will work in close collaboration with a Research Fellow, who will lead the project team. While the Project will have a strong teamwork emphasis, there is scope for independent research on project-relevant issues.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:
Position Dimension & Relationships:
While located in CAPPE ANU, the successful applicant will also work closely with the Project's CIs located in the Crawford School of Economics and Government and the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research. Given the multi-disciplinary nature of the project, the occupant will be encouraged to develop further contacts across the University where these are likely to benefit the project.

Role Statement:
The appointee will be expected to undertake the following tasks:
1. Contribute significantly to the work of the project team that will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the project.
2. Undertake under limited supervision research relevant to the project.
3. Produce or contribute to the production of conference or seminar papers and publications from this research.
4. Contribute to the management of the project's field work, for example by liaising with partner organisations on the selection of researchers and research sites, assisting with the design of survey instruments, assisting with the interpretation of data, contributing to the methodology workshops for researchers, or assisting with the dissemination of research findings.
5. Undertake some administrative functions connected with the operation of the project.
6. Participate in CAPPE seminars and in other Faculty, College of University seminars relevant to the project.
7. Perform other duties consistent with the classification of the position.
Selection criteria  

SELECTION CRITERIA:
A. Qualifications
1. An MA or a PhD in a project-relevant discipline, such as philosophy, political science, gender studies, development studies or development economics.

B. Experience
1. Sound grasp of at least one of the philosophical, development or gender equity literatures relevant to the project's objectives. A Level B appointee will be expected to have had research experience that has resulted in publications and/or conference papers that give evidence of research ability.
2. Work experience in developing countries or with development organisations an advantage. A Level B appointee will ideally be able to demonstrate familiarity with field work.

1. Demonstrated interest in the objectives of the project.
2. Ability to contribute to the work of a small project team.
3. Ability to communicate effectively in English and build rapport across a variety of cultural contexts.
