This interdisciplinary conference will include several workshops on gender-based violence against women, including Susan Brison's on "Violence and the Remaking of a Self: A Philosophical Perspective on Trauma" and Helen Benedict's on women soldiers who were raped in Iraq: "'You've Gotta Be Twice as Bad as the Boys': The Uses of Narrative to Explore the Experiences and Needs of Women Veterans"

"After Shock: Humanities Perspectives on Trauma"
A conference for health care professionals who work with veterans, military,
and civilians who have experienced trauma,
November 12-13, 2010 in Washington, DC

Conference website:

Join us for this innovative conference for health care professionals who
work with veterans and others who have experienced trauma. Discover
literature's ability to provide new insights into trauma's effects on your
patients - and to sustain you as you care for them.

Conference sessions will address Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome, Traumatic
Brain Injury, Sexual Violence, and other trauma related mental health
issues, and will introduce a range of humanities programs that support
health care professionals who have vicariously or directly experienced
trauma themselves. Literature is invaluable in helping providers better
understand and treat the psychic wounds that so many of their patients have
suffered – and in healing themselves.

Up to 14 CMEs are available through the College of Physicians and Surgeons
of Columbia University.
