You may have read, or heard about, an article about the GPS that appeared on a blog on Tuesday, 4/24. We (the officers of the GPS) had been given no warning about the article, and when one of us spotted it, we all were shocked by its factual inaccuracy and its tone. We also were dismayed that the organizers of the blog had made no effort to check on its accuracy, and that already many of the respondents were uncritically accepting its claims as true. We decided that there was not time to consult with the GPS membership in deciding how to respond, and that instead we needed to put a written response onto the same blog, right away. Two of us wrote one and it appeared on Thursday, 4/26 (it’s response #7). Although we regard the article itself to be highly unfair, its subject matter – the participation of women philosophers at philosophy conferences – is timely and important. Our response to the article mentions what the GPS has done so far to encourage more female participation in our conferences, and please be assured that we are interested in taking further steps toward that goal. We invite you to send suggestions. They will be shared and very much appreciated.
