I don't know if members of the list have heard, but Jean Bethke Elshtain passed away on Sunday night. I imagine that a number of people on this list may not be fond of Jean because of her affiliation with some conservative groups--and of course she was not a philosopher but a political theorist--but she was one of the first generation of second wave feminist political theorists and her book Public Man/Private Woman, for all its problems, was highly influential in the field. She had been suffering for some time with a debilitating heart ailment, presumably linked to her post-polio syndrome, but she was active as recently as this spring. She will be missed by many of us, even those who disagreed with her.

Best, Nancy
