Do you want to attend graduate school?  The most successful applicants to graduate school present evidence that predicts they will be superstar graduate students.  Are you accumulating that evidence?  If you are preparing to submit your application, can you frame your experiences such that people who see only the documentation you submit are impressed with your credentials and understand why you are an excellent match for the program that they offer?  Here are some of the key things graduate admissions committees look for in candidates:

·         Evidence of competence (GPA, grades in relevant courses, standardized test scores).

·         Evidence that you have been involved and engaged; you do much more than the minimum.  (Also the absence of narcissism or entitlement.)

·         Evidence of maturity, intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn.

·         Evidence of motivation, determination, and drive; you work hard.

·         Relevant experiences that have prepared you to make a logical and well-informed decision regarding the career plans you are pursuing through their graduate program; demonstration that your values and interests match those of the graduate program.

The ideal time to begin preparing is long before you need to submit your admissions application.  Begin accumulating evidence now!

• Ethical Leadership for the 21st Century. Cynthia Cooper, Vice President at WorldCom will be the third speaker in the Madison Vision Series, November 13, 3:30 pm in Grafton-Stovall. More information
• Study Abroad Information Session.  Information for students interested in learning about study-abroad options.  November 13, 4 PM, repeated November 18, 11 AM, JMAC 6, Suite 22.  More information
• Colleges Against Cancer.  Learn about lung cancer and the harmful effects of tobacco.  November 14, 7 PM, Transitions Room, Warren Campus Center.  More information
• Global Connections.  Join the JMU international community to mingle and relax over tea or coffee.  November 15, 3 – 5 PM, Hoffman Hall Lounge.  More information
• Paid Internship.  Every year the Center for International Stabilization and Recovery (CISR) at JMU selects one JMU senior, graduate student or recent graduate to serve as the JMU Frasure-Kruzel-Drew Fellow at the U.S. Department of State. The application deadline is 5:00 p.m., Friday, December 6, 2013. More information

 

Ongoing Opportunities

• Connect with the local community. The Reading Road Show-Gus Bus program and the Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education program are recruiting volunteers for tutoring programs. Volunteers visit the child’s home for 1 – 2 hours per week. More information

·         The JMU Undergraduate Research Journal welcomes submissions from students enrolled in all JMU undergraduate programs. More information

• CSDC Workshops. Free workshops are available through the Counseling and Student Development Center regarding problems such as dealing with depression, long-distance relationships, conflict and difficult people, assertiveness, anger management, etc. More information
• Career & Academic Planning offers resume writing workshops, career coaching, mock interviews, employer-networking, and other opportunities to prepare for post-graduation opportunities. More information
• JMU Learning Centers provide assistance with writing, communication, math, science and selected other courses. More information
