For What May I Hope?

The Eastern Division of the Society for Women in Philosophy invites answers
to the question “For What May I Hope?” to be presented at the 2014 annual
conference to be held in Little Rock, Arkansas on the 11th of April 2014.

Keynote Speaker: Nancy Snow (Marquette University)

The Society for Women in Philosophy, Eastern Division, welcomes proposals
for 30-minute papers on all topics bearing on the conference theme,
including responses to the following questions:

What is the nature of hope?

How can emancipatory political movements maintain hope?

Is hope a virtue?

            Is hope an emotion?

What does it mean to hope for a “better” future?

Is hope different from wishful thinking?

How is hope contingent upon social and political contexts?

What is the relationship between hope and teleology?

Can the world be improved by human effort?

We encourage papers from a wide range of traditions intersecting with this
theme: Social and Political Philosophy, Ethics, Metaphysics, Philosophy of
Emotion, Phenomenology, Queer Theory, Disability Studies, Environmental
Philosophy, Post-Colonial Studies, and Biomedical Ethics, among others.

Abstracts should be sent by the 15th of December to: Roxy Green (
