Subject: Re: Pakistani novelist to visit EMU

Dear Friends of Pakistan:

Professor Michael Medley of Eastern Mennonite University would like to invite you to the following program:

On Thursday, March 13 from 6:30 to 7:45 at Common Grounds Coffee House on the EMU campus a Pakistani-American writer Sorayya Khan from Ithaca, NY will present a reading of her work followed by questions and answers. She is coming for our Writers Read series. The event is free and open to the public and includes light refreshments.

Sorayya Khan is the author of two novels, Noor (2003) and Five Queen’s Road (2009). She was awarded a US Fulbright Research Grant to conduct research in Pakistan and Bangladesh for one of her novels and was awarded a prize from a prestigious Canadian literary journal for a piece that was the starting point for her novel-in-progress. She received a grant, which took her to Banda Aceh, Indonesia after the tsunami where she interviewed survivors. Over the years, she has been published in various literary quarterlies, including The Kenyon Review and North American Review, and several anthologies.

The daughter of a Dutch mother and Pakistani father, Sorayya Khan is interested in the intersection of silence, complicity, and trauma.  Her first novel, Noor, is based on experiences of veterans from the 1971 Bangladesh war of independence from Pakistan.  Her second novel, Five Queens Road, weaves together family saga and the aftermath of the partition of India (1947), featuring characters who struggle with traumatic memories of World War II and conflicts arising from religious and class identities in post-partition Lahore.  Her third novel, City of Spies, about General Zia-ul-Haq's coup and PM Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's execution, has just been accepted for publication.
