What will come next?

What positions are available for students who complete various CHBS major programs?  If you are about to graduate, we hope that you have already thought about this; if not, it is certainly time to begin.  College students should be exploring career opportunities during all of their college years.  Here are a few resources that can help:

Career Guides to JMU Majors.  This resource provides a sampling of career opportunities for each JMU major.  Developed by JMU Career And Academic Planning.

Alumni Employment and Graduate School Survey Results.  The JMU Office of Institutional Research conducts surveys to learn about alumni employment and graduate school experiences. You can search this database by major.

Recruit-A-Duke is an online career services management system that provides JMU students access to internships, full-time jobs, career fairs, workshops, information sessions, and more. Developed by JMU Career And Academic Planning

USA Jobs is a resource you can use to find government internships and jobs for recent graduates.

Idealist Job Search.  This website provides students with the opportunity to search for job by idealistic focus, such as civic engagement, disability, economic development, disaster relief, and many more. This allows students to find jobs that will fulfill a need for service

JMU Joblink.  There are currently 39 student and 12 graduate assistant positions, as well as 12 wage and 16 classified positions posted on the JMU employment site.


Summer and Fall Registration Continues. It is not too late to take a summer school class or adjust your fall schedule. For summer consider:  

NSG 490, Section 4102.  Emergency Response Training for Health Care Providers.  This course will help students learn how to respond to disaster from a healthcare provider perspective.  Students who complete this course will earn 10 certifications from FEMA.  All books provided free of charge.  For more information contact Dr. Raab ([log in to unmask]; 568-2729).  More information

Events & Opportunities

Last Day of Class, May 1.

Graduate School Community Picnic, May 1, 4:30 pm at Grace Street House. Wrap up the end of the semester with JMU friends, faculty, and administrators at this annual event which includes free food, prizes, music, 2014 Impact Awards, and much more! All members and friends of the JMU graduate community are welcome to attend.  More information

Undergraduate Scholarship for Excellent Writing.  The School of Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication is accepting submissions for the Whitten Maher Memorial Scholarship for Writing and Design through Friday, May 2.  This $1000 scholarship is open to all JMU undergraduate students.  Students may either nominate themselves or be nominated by a faculty member.  More information

Family Connection.  Volunteer for Family Connection and watch kids from 2 months to 6 years while their parents attend parenting classes.  Dinner provided.  Assistance needed every Tuesday, 5 pm – 8:45 pm, April 29-July 22.  For more information contact Mitzi Wolfe ([log in to unmask]). First Annual Community Foster Care Awareness Month Expo.  Tuesday, May 6, 4-8 pm, Blue Ridge Community College Plecker Center.  Learn about the impact of foster care on our local community.  Connect with resources for current and prospective foster and adoptive families and show your support for local youth in need.  For more information contact Rachel Stebbins Trissel ([log in to unmask]; 540 453-2412)

Richmond Alumni Networking Event.  Students are invited to a professional networking event to be held at the Richmond Country Club on May, 20, 6-8 pm.  More information

Promoting Resilience & Competence will be the focus of the 18th Annual Institute in Counseling, June 16-July 18. This year's Summer Institute will include thirteen different sessions ranging from Exploring the DSM-5 and Nature-Based Play Therapy to courses for graduate credit, such as Human Sexuality and Development and Gender Issues in Counseling More information


Ongoing Opportunities

Connect with the local community. The Reading Road Show-Gus Bus program and the Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education program are recruiting volunteers for tutoring programs. Volunteers visit the child’s home for 1 – 2 hours per week. More information

Career & Academic Planning offers resume writing workshops, career coaching, mock interviews, employer-networking, and other opportunities to prepare for post-graduation opportunities. More information

JMU Learning Centers provide assistance with writing, communication, math, science and selected other courses. More information
