I have been using a metaphor which I thought was Socrates's but just discovered is not, and I am looking for its true source.  It is about how our awareness of our ignorance expands with our knowledge.  Knowledge is like a campfire and ignorance is the circle of darkness that surrounds is.  As the campfire grows larger,  the circle of darkness expands.  As we know more, we become more aware of all that we do not know.  Does anyone know where this metaphor comes from?
