Dear Rochelle,

Thank you for making this change in the rules for nominating DWIPs and thanks to Sally Haslanger for suggesting a good alternative. I can certainly see that ESWIP may incur considerable costs if it not only administers the award but also pays the winner's expenses at Eastern APA and hosts a reception.

Could you remind us what was the previous policy, to which you are now reverting? I would especially like to know if membership in non-US SWIPs allows recommenders to write for nominees?

Also, while we are on this topic, how is the selection committee chosen? Years ago, I was on that committee for a three-year term, along with a philosopher from the west coast, and at that point it seemed as though outgoing committee members simply nominated new ones. But perhaps I am mis-remembering. Certainly I don't remember SWIP membership being used as a criterion for anything.

Thanks very much for your organization. I think the award is becoming increasingly prestigious.

Sincerely,

Alison

Subject: Membership Requirements for DWP Nominations

Dear All,

As many of you have likely already seen, this year's call for DWP nominations stipulated that 2/3 of all letter writers would need to be in good standing with ESWIP.  The reasons for this change were exclusively related to the expense ESWIP bears as the coordinating body for the award.

In lieu of this, the DWP committee and the ESWIP officers have agreed that if we were to receive enough donations to defray the cost of the award, we can revert back to the initial policy regarding SWIP membership rather than specific ESWIP membership for 2/3 of letter writers supporting nominations.

I am happy to report that Sally Haslanger is leading this charge and has been the first to donate to the DWP fund.  If you would like to contribute to this fund, proceeds of which will only be used for the purposes of maintaining and promoting the DWP award (the website currently mentions travel support; we will update this as soon as we are able), please see the ESWIP website.

You may donate using paypal or by check.

We greatly appreciate all support of this incredibly important award.

Very best,
Roxy
