Concepción Professor and Chair Philosophy & Religious Studies, NQ 204 Ball State University Affiliate Faculty, Women¹s and Gender Studies President, American Association of Philosophy Teachers CALL FOR APPLICATIONS The American Association of Philosophy Teachers (AAPT) To Improve The Quality Of Instruction In Philosophy At All Level Workshop: Teaching & Learning in Philosophy Location: San Francisco State University, San Francisco, CA (refreshments provided) Date: Saturday, March 7, 2015 Time: 9am 5pm Seminar Leader: David W. Concepción, AAPT President Bill Anelli, AAPT member-at-large Paul Green, Longtime AAPT member Application Deadline: Jan. 30, 2015 Description Participants will read some of the best literature regarding how learning happens, how to design maximally effective courses, and how to improve classroom practice. The goal is not only to provide tips, although we will provide some. Rather, the seminar is designed to enhance participants¹ ability to make effective pedagogical choices. The interactive sessions provide opportunities for participants to reflect with colleagues on how to individualize evidence-based best teaching practices to one¹s own idiosyncratic teaching contexts. Participants will learn how to identify and select challenging and transformative learning objectives and how to design and assess sequences of learning activities to make the achievement of those goals highly likely. The friendships and collegial relationships begun here can last a lifetime. Comments from Past Participants ³The seminar shifted and honed the way I think about and practice teaching in substantial ways² ³Inspiring, fascinating, and incredibly helpful² ³A must for anyone who cares about students² ³An intensive boot-camp for learner-centered education² ³Not at all like the typical (mostly useless) ³teaching orientation² that most graduate students get² ³A surreal experience in which one is surrounded by many philosophers who place teaching before research² Average evaluation of participants in the past six years: 3.7 of 4 stars Eligibility & Fees The workshop is open to, and free for, members of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers. Become a member today. Student membership is $25 and regular membership is $40.
