I'm saddened to hear this news.  Nancy made such important contributions to feminist philosophy.  I just taught her Feminist Standpoint article this past year, in a seminar on The Philosophy of Karl Marx.  It continued to resonate with the latest generation of grad students.

I'd like to join my voice to others, with gratitude for Nancy's life.  Her work certainly enriched my own understanding of the feminist standpoint I tried to bring to my own work.

Nancy (Hirschmann), thank you for posting this and thanks to others for their reminiscences. I especially liked being reminded about that Quest publication--I still have those journals though I should give them to some archive. Yes, I knew that Nancy (Hartsock) was diagnosed with late stage breast cancer 30 years ago but she survived for so long that I began to hope she would go on indefinitely. I last saw her at the Hypatia celebration in Seattle and I still have on my desktop a paper she wrote with a wonderful feminist critique of Marxist David Harvey's account of primitive accumulation. I am sad that we have lost Nancy and her bold feminist vision but it is wonderful that she lived and produced the work that influenced so many of so deeply. And I am glad that she had a relatively easy death.

Nancy’s earliest paper (I think it was the first) to introduce the notion of feminist standpoint, was published in QUEST: A Feminist Quarterly.  It was an era in which feminist theory wasn’t sorted out into disciplines, all to the good.  I devoured that paper and have taught it many times, in that original form.  As a theme or persistent thread, one version or another, over the years, of “feminist standpoint” has been integral to my my whole take on, and analysis of, women’s situations in patriarchies.  Nancy was one of our giants, as in: we stand on the shoulders of giants.   I am sorry to hear that passed and very glad to hear that it was a good death.  She, and we all, deserve that.

I am sure that, even though Nancy was not a philosopher, some on this list knew her and her work and would want to know about her passing. She was a very important person for many of us, and a “founding mother” for feminist theory

Dear Friends of Nancy:

Nancy passed away around 4:00 am today.  She picked a good time to die. Her beloved nephew, Jess, arrived early yesterday afternoon and spent the afternoon and evening with her.  Jess read to Nancy for several hours and would occasionally check in with her to see what she wanted.  Did she want him to continue reading to her?  If so, please indicate with finger motion.  Nancy indicated "yes" every time.  Jess wanted to sit with her indefinitely, but he got very tired late into the night and stretched out on the sofa in Nancy's living room.  Around 4:00 am, the nursing assistant on duty checked in on Nancy and discovered that she had passed away.

Please join me in mourning Nancy, who died way too young at the age of 70. Nancy was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer 30 years ago, right when I joined her as a member of the Political Science faculty at the University of Washington.  She defied all odds and continued in her passionate pursuit of feminist theory, social justice, horses, cats, French food, harpsichord, and more!  Let's also celebrate her achievements and incredible resilience.

I am so grateful that Nancy had a good death, as she wished.  She did not linger, and she had excellent nursing care.  I would recommend Bright Star nursing services to anyone who is in need of such services.  Every nurse who attended Nancy treated her with attentive, loving, and professional care.

We will be arranging a small, local memorial service for Nancy next week. If you live in the area and would like to participate, please let me know.

One final note of importance:  When Nancy retired several years ago, we established, in her honor, an endowed fund for "The Nancy C.M. Hartsock Prize for Best Graduate Paper in Feminist Political Theory" at the University of Washington.  If you would like to contribute to this fund, which has not yet reached full endowment status, please send a check made out to:  "University of Washington Foundation", with a memo line indicating "Hartsock Paper Prize."  Please mail checks to:
