SV. London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine VISITING FELLOWS PROGRAMME ETHICS and SCIENCE in GLOBAL HEALTH 2015 -16 Visiting Fellowships LSHTM is offering 2 visiting fellowships during the academic year 2015 – 2016 (Sept – June) for individuals wanting to conduct research on the relationships between ethics and science in global health. As a world leading institution engaged in the promotion of public health through top-rated scientific research, the LSHTM opens its doors to experienced individuals who wish to engage with practical and theoretical reflections on links between ethics and science. In particular we are interested in attracting individuals with an interest in the ethical and governance implications of institutionalized practices of scientific production. This includes exploring the science, research activities and governance processes at LSHTM. Visiting fellows will be provided with workspace, and be free to explore the three research faculties (Epidemiology and Population Health, Infectious and Tropical Diseases, and Public Health and Policy) as well as surrounding University of London institutions. Visiting fellows will be invited to participate in the activities of the Anthropology, Politics and Policy Group group (APP) within the Faculty of Public Health Policy and to contribute to the International Programme for Ethics, Public Health and Human Rights (IPEPH). Terms of Appointment - The Visiting Fellows (‘Visitor’) will be able to stay at the LSHTM for a period of between 4 to 12 weeks depending on their work plan. - Each Fellow is expected to make at least one lunchtime presentation during her/his stay within the seminar series of the Department of Global Health and Development (GHD). The Fellow will also be invited to present his/her work in the framework of other seminar series organized in other LSHTM Departments and Faculties depending on the subject of their research plan. - No stipend is attached to the fellowship and whenever possible, a modest contribution to administrative costs would be appreciated. However, LSHTM is committed to its equality policy and will consider bursaries for suitable candidates from low and middle income countries who have no available support. - Due to the nature of the position, applicants are fully responsible for their visa requirements. LSHTM is unable to sponsor a Visitor who does not already have a right to work in the UK and/or to obtain an appropriate visitor visa; however LSHTM is happy to provide guidance and support to future applicants https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.gov.uk_business-2Dvisitor-2Dvisa&d=BQIFaQ&c=eLbWYnpnzycBCgmb7vCI4uqNEB9RSjOdn_5nBEmmeq0&r=Oo4TCJF8pXcsWPDC7Sy8bdP2IJ6ZbST0v2xdYtuNH80&m=NTGJDFQxCOC7N8hdsf186MqSS6lFLWLeZ6pP51ou9Gw&s=fJSc6BRNc3eFYYO_vCldyAZ975CGlwsXAKVyODZALiA&e= Qualifications Applicants can be experienced professionals or must have submitted their Ph.D. thesis or be in possession of other equivalent degrees prior to their visit. Preference will be given – but will not be exclusive - to applicants with a background in philosophy, social sciences, and international law. The application will be evaluated on the basis of its content, feasibility, and originality, favouring research plans looking at the institutional practices of knowledge production and at their ethical and governance implications within academic and research institutions, including LSHTM. How to Apply: Applicants should submit the following materials by 31 August. 1. A curriculum vitae 2. A research proposal and work plan (not to exceed 1,500 words) 3. An example of previous scholarship (journal or newspaper article, report) 4. Contact information for two references 5. A copy of your current passport (front cover; details page; any visa/right to work information) Candidates can expect to receive a response to their application by the second week in September.
