Danika’s research project uses case simulations to evaluate how students develop clinical problem solving skills via Decision Sim™.

·         Andrew Carnes (Psychology) completed a project using eye-tracking software that provided valuable information that lead to the redesign of JMU’s homepage. For the full story, go to http://www.jmu.edu/news/2015/07/21-undergraduate-eye-track-research.shtml.

These samples will be used for her honors thesis on hematological changes in recreational cyclists exposed to high-volume training.

Enhancement and Engagement Opportunities

Mentoring Opportunities!

Valley Scholars Program

It’s not too late to get involved in the Valley Scholars Mentoring program, but you must act now!

Less than 30% of students living in poverty end up enrolling in a four-year school; among those who do enroll, less than 50% end up graduating. JMU’s Valley Scholars program seeks to change this dynamic in the Shenandoah Valley by identifying high-potential, first-generation, low-socioeconomic-status middle and high school students and providing them with scholarships to JMU upon successful completion of high school. In order to support these students in such a huge paradigm shift, the Valley Scholars program needs the help of a committed group of James Madison University mentors each year. Mentorship is a key component of the Valley Scholars program, providing positive role models and ongoing academic support, as well as emotional and personal support through active listening, encouragement and problem solving. JMU mentorship teams are assigned to partnering schools and visit those sites weekly to meet with their mentees. Beyond school visits, mentors attend a full-group bi-weekly discussion-based class on JMU’s campus to share experiences and address the challenges that arise while mentoring the Valley Scholars. This class offers JMU students the chance to make a significant impact on the lives of adolescents and their families while receiving support and guidance in the process. Being a mentor for the Valley Scholars Program is an invaluable experience that goes far beyond a resume- or CV-builder; it will provide leadership, communication, and relationship skills as well as the chance to live out JMU’s motto to “be the change.”

Enrollment to the course is by override only. To apply to be a member of this special experience visit the form link http://goo.gl/forms/MTrL8jcm71.

Overcoming Barriers Program

JMU’s Overcoming Barriers program affords students (from all majors) the opportunity to mentor children and adults with disabilities within a physical activity setting.  Overcoming Barriers offers a wide variety of physical activity programs (offered on campus, in local schools, and/or in the community) in which individuals with disabilities can participate.  Participants will be matched with a mentor, YOU, who will work with them one-on-one and provide necessary support during their specific program/setting.  Experience not necessary!

You will be assigned an individual to mentor based on your schedule, your physical activity interests/experience, as well as your level of comfort/experience working with individuals with disabilities.  Your Minimum Commitment is once a week for 1 ½ -2 hrs.

Initial Mentor Training Meetings are as follows (in Godwin Hall, Room 353) – Please indicate which meeting you plan to attend:

o   Sunday, September 6th – 4:00-5:30pm

o   Tuesday, September 8th – 8:00-9:30pm

o   Thursday, September 10th – 7:00-8:30pm

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please fill out the mentor intake form –https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VynymF5_VtjQkD7oc2L7k1iG3u_VIrU__m6QDN_Y1lc
