At the urging of Alison Jaggar (and through her, Diana Meyers), I am sharing with FEAST-L the comment Sandra Bartky asked me to post on Facebook. I'll just quote the entire Facebook post, as it includes a bit more about my conversation with Sandy about Claudia. (I should note also that, over the years, Sandy has shared many stories about her friendship with Claudia, ranging from both happy and not-so-happy stories about Midwest SWIP to a shopping escapade in Chicago.) Here is the Facebook post: Just had a wonderful hour chatting with Sandra Bartky. The occasion was to let her know about our loss of Claudia Card, and Sandy asked me to post on FB this comment from her: "Your work has taught me much, and your friendship has enriched my life. I will never forget you, dear Claudia." So that is the main purpose of this post, but Sandy went on to reminisce about her experiences in the founding of SWIP, which started out with a few women meeting in hotel rooms at APA meetings, discussing the shared problems they were facing in their academic careers. We talked about how extraordinary it is that those informal meetings have led to SWIP becoming an international phenomenon. After SWIP got a bit better organized, Claudia came to one of the meetings. Sandy said she seemed a bit frightened and withdrawn, altogether different from the internationally known philosopher she became! (I'm hoping young academics will extrapolate freely!) We made a plan for Luna and I to get together with Sandy in the winter or spring and make some video recordings of her SWIP memories, and her other recollections about an amazing life. The plan is for them to be posted on youtube. Trust me, based on conversations the three of us have had in years past, she has some extraordinary tales to tell!
