It is already more than a week since we lost Claudia Card. In that time, there has been an outpouring of grief but also many testimonies to a brilliant philosopher, dedicated teacher, and generous mentor. Claudia was all of these, but I’d like additionally to emphasize her extraordinary courage. In a short remembrance posted on Facebook, Sandra Bartky recalls perceiving Claudia as timid when she first started coming to mid-west SWIP in the late 1970s. I too remember Claudia at this time as being rather shrinking, with a demure braid down her back. Within a very few years, however, Claudia cut her hair and came out of the closet. With Anne Waters, I recall Claudia’s bow tie and three piece suit from Germany and I too recall Claudia dancing at the parties. After a decade of professional silence, Claudia found a new philosophical voice in the early 1980s and from then until her death she produced a powerful flow of incisive articles and books. Three decades ago, it took more courage to be a feminist philosopher than it does today, let alone a philosopher speaking with an explicitly lesbian voice. Claudia raised topics that were virtually taboo and challenged the views prevailing even among feminist and lesbian philosophers. She discussed lesbian battering and horizontal violence, sadomasochism, feminist separatism, and adult child sex, arguing against marriage and motherhood and even opposing same sex marriage. Later in her career, Claudia addressed directly and deeply topics that many philosophers shrink from thinking about, including mass atrocities and genocidal rape. I was frequently struck by Claudia’s vast empirical knowledge about what she called these secular evils, research that must have been deeply disturbing but which made possible her moral insights. Over the past year, Claudia faced her impending death with a calmness and good humor that many of us found inspirational. Courage should be recognized as a central philosophical virtue and no one had more of it than Claudia Card. We will try to be worthy of you, Claudia!

 Much love,

Alison.

I want to add my words to Bonnie's.  Claudia was a true mentor, not only bringing to us her pioneering lucid radical feminist .lesbian feminist thought, but i agree with bonnie, a model senior mentor to juniors. She had already reviewed an essay, in detail, that i had contributed to a non academic theory book called Unlearning Saodomasochism edited by Irene Reti.  she showed an amazing generosity as an academic--indeed a *renowned* academic-- in treating a non peer reviewed book with the kind of attention it deserved, since a couple of articles were theoretically rigorous. She paid close attention to my article and especially it's non didactic proposals in a way no reviewer ever has. Years later, when i was up for tenure she wrote me a stunning review letter. I later contacted her for supportive letters of recommendation when i needed to find a new job, and she was thoroughly in agreement despite the fact that we had only met briefly years before and she might not have even remembered me. (Sandra Bartky is another example of this kind of true senior mentor).

Her aim was true.  This is a big loss. As a feminist philosopher/writer suffering from cancer myself, i'm reminded of how much work there is to be done, but grateful for those who preceded me to allow me and then my students to make it go forward.
thanks to all of you who are dedicating panels and essays in appreciation of her. she went too young.

sincerely

What heartbreaking news. For me as a philosopher new to the profession in 2003, Claudia extended herself as a source of support on a number of occasions. She showed such an intense interest and level of care, I was both moved and surprised (we didn't know one another before this). She is a model for me of what a senior woman colleague can be, and can mean to someone more junior. All that above and beyond her extraordinary and important philosophical work... I won't be at FEAST this year, but I will wish I were there with the rest of you remembering her.

I'm saddened to hear of Claudia's passing. She was an exceptional

I plan to dedicate an upcoming issue of the _Journal of Social

to her accomplishments and influence). If there is a symposium on
her work, I would be glad to see the papers published in the journal
as well.

All best,

I hope that we can dedicate some time at the upcoming FEAST
conference to remember Claudia -- perhaps an open mike at one of the
receptions. So many of us are terribly sad.

As many of you now know, Claudia Card died last night at about 8 pm,
surrounded by loving family members.

I know of at least two APA sessions (Eastern and Central) that had
already been planned to honor Claudia and her work.

I hope folks will use the FEAST and SWIP lists to let us know of
other such events that might be planned.
