Joseph’s answers below are great; I’d add some minor updates based on having run judging for a number of years at Regionals:

- Introductions can be good—judges like to hear the kids, and it’s a good way to break the ice

- The three Judging sessions should all be 10 minutes. For Research and Core Values, that’s 5+5; for Robot Design, 10 straight

- There are usually four table runs: one practice (which doesn’t count, but lets the team adjust to the fact that it’s not their table) plus three that count

Cedric:

Just my opinion, as an average 4th-year coach who has judged at least twice every year for 4 years. (I'm not an expert.)

Core Values.

1. yes

2. yes

3. depends on venue and question, usually about 5 min for responding to question, 5 min for questions from judges.

4. yes

5. Introductions not needed (Judges probably won't remember) Name tags are fine. will be counted in time.

6. yes 3 adults (2 coaches, one historian/photographer.)

Project

1. yes

2. see #5 above

3. yes, see #6 above

4. yes, and anything else for the presentation (models, prototypes, music, props, etc.)

Robot Design

1. yes

2. If it comes up. Some judges prefer to direct the kids, some judges just tell the kids "show me what you've got."

3. if the teams wants to, or the judges ask

4. duration about the same as CV and project, depending on venue.

5. 3

Missions

1. No, but usually 3 trips to the official tables

2. depends on venue, usually about 5 minutes per reservation, there should be a sign-up board

3. as many as can fit (usually in a gym, so hundreds!)

The practice field table is usually separate from the official field tables for scoring. Field tables with referees determine official scores and are scheduled. The practice table is usually self-moderated and available to reserve, first-come and first-served. (Please remember your CV here.)

Hope this helps,

Subject: [VADCFLL-L] Questions - Please reply

We viewed the fllstartingpoint video which was very helpful.

My apologies for the long list of question and if we missed any from the video.

We're a rookie team and needed clarification on the questions below-

Core values

1. Are the kids allowed to take the poster into the room?

2. Is this a closed session?

3. How long is this session?

4. Is this 5 minutes for the Core value activity and 5 minutes for judging?

5. Should the kids introduce themselves? Will this be counted in the time allocated?

6. Are only 3 adults allowed in the room with the kids?

Project

1. Is this 5 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for judging?

2. Should the kids introduce themselves? Will this be counted in the time allocated?

3. Are only 3 adults allowed in the room with the kids?

4. I assume this is a closed session and a poster/trifold is allowed in this room.

Robot design

1. Is this a closed session?

2. Should the kids mention their roles as we have some "experts" in programming who can answer questions.

3. Should they walkthrough their binder?

4. How long is the judging of Robot design?

5. How many adults are allowed in the room with the kids?

Missions

1. Is this a closed session?

2. How long do we get at the practice table?

3. How many adults are allowed in the room with the kids?

Thank you!

Cedric
