New Building

The new building will be complete at the end of May with furniture and equipment starting to move in in June!  This new building will provide a variety of labs, classrooms, and research spaces that will allow cutting edge learning opportunities for students. ·         Congratulations JMU Hack Team with their Grand Prize win!!! This weekend, five students from Engineering, Occupational Therapy, and Social Work participated in the annual "Caring for the Caregiver" Hackfest event in Richmond, VA. ·         Scott Goldschmidt (Health Services Administration) placed second in the undergraduate division of the annual Richard J. Stull Student Essay Competition in Healthcare Management for his essay "Case Management of Heart Failure Patients: A Strategic Framework for Reducing Readmissions and Improving Patient Outcomes." The competition is a national contest sponsored by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). The purpose of the competition is to stimulate and demonstrate the ability of future healthcare executives to identify important issues in their professions. Contest winners and their respective institutions were presented with certificates and monetary awards at the Congress on Healthcare Leadership meeting last week. Congratulations Scott and the HSA program for continuing the impressive tradition of JMU essay contest winners!



·         Kristen Smith, a Graduate Psychology doctoral student in Assessment and Measurement, was appointed to serve as Division D Senior Representative for the Graduate Student Council (GSC) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in 2015-2016. As part of her responsibilities, Kristen will attend the AERA Annual Meeting in April in Washington, D.C.



·         On March 3rd, senior CSD honors student Harley Wheeler presented his thesis work (poster) at the 2016 American Auditory Society Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, AZ. His work, "Build-up Effect of Auditory Stream Segregation Using Amplitude-Modulated Narrowband Noise," was supported, in part, by a Research Grant from CHBS and funding from the CSD department. This work was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Yingjiu Nie.



·         Michael Morikawa, an AuD student (graduate student in CSD), will present his dissertation work on April 13-16, at the AudiologyNOW! (American Academy of Audiology) 2016 Conference in Phoenix, AZ. This project was supported by the Ruth Symposium Student Research Grant and faculty funding from CSD. Michael recently received the Graduate Travel Grant to support his attendance at this conference. Michael's work, entitled "Effects of age and musical experience on melodic contour ID and sentence recognition by children," was conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Yingjiu Nie.


·         Four Nursing students have been elected to the new VNSA (Virginia Nursing Student Association) Board. Congratulations to the following students:

·         Sixteen Occupational Therapy faculty and students are scheduled to present their scholarly work at the national AOTA Conference in Chicago in April.



·         During the winter months, Occupational Therapy graduate students Jake Gilbert, Heidi Maeyer, Thomas Grunwald, Kiley Pentencin, Christine Tuebner, Hope Sadowski, Chanele Molano, Emily Lupin and Katrina Lauer volunteered on weekends at Massanutten Ski Resort with Therapeutic Adventures, a program that assists persons who have disabilities with skiing.

·         A group of first year Occupational Therapy students volunteered as support staff for Woodrow Wilson's Winter Games in February. It sounds like they were a huge hit in the eyes of the participants and staff members. Way to go OT students!



·         A large delegation of JMU faculty, administrators, and students from the Assessment and Measurement program (Graduate Psychology) traveled to Houston in December to attend and present at the Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC). Dr. Keston Fulcher (Center for Assessment & Research Studies), Dr. John Hathcoat (Assistant Assessment Specialist), Kristen Smith (2nd year Ph.D. student), and Courtney Sanders (2ND year Ph.D. student) presented workshops at the meeting.


·         Dr. John Hathcoat (Graduate Psychology) and members of Student Affairs Assessment Support Services (SASS) (Heather Harris, Madison Holzman, and Derek Sauder) provided a webinar about implementation fidelity assessment through The Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education (AALHE) in January. Approximately 500 people registered for the webinar.



·         Dr. Tom Moran (Kinesiology) and Shelly Bloomfield (Occupational Therapy) are teaming up to develop a soccer team for children from refugee families and children who have disabilities.



·         Dr. Chris Clinard and Sarah McClements Hodgson (AuD student - CSD) presented their research "Neural correlates of the binaural masking level difference in humans" at the Scientific and Technology Meeting of the American Auditory Society in early March.



·         Chance McDermott, a doctoral student in Graduate Psychology's Combined-Integrated Clinical and School Psychology program is respected by faculty for his strong gifts in teaching and presentation. He presented a section of the Building Cultural Competency Workshop (BCCW) entitled "Two Minds," based on Gregg Henriques' justification hypothesis. In addition, Chance has been a co-presenter for three recent conference presentations including the Collaborating Across Borders (CAB V) conference in September.

·         Dr. Carol Dudding (CSD) has been named as a Distinguished Scholar and Fellow to the Speech & Language Pathology Academy in the National Academies of Practice (NAP). This honor recognizes outstanding achievements in practice, scholarship or policy. Congratulations Dr. Dudding on the honor.

·         Dr. Jeff Dyche (Psychology) will serve as a consultant to the Geneva Foundation to assist with a three-year research project on actigraphy (a non-invasive method of monitoring human rest/activity cycles). This project will also fund a graduate student and travel support.

·         Welcome new faculty member Catherine Brown (Nursing)! Catherine's primary responsibilities will be teaching in clinical applications and psych clinicals.


Programs



·         The December 2015 graduating cohort of the Physician Assistant Studies program has earned a 100% first time pass rate on the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE), the national board exam for certification as a physician assistant. Twenty-three students sat for this exam. This is the second consecutive year this program has posted a 100% first time pass rate. Congratulations PA program!



·         The JMU-OTCES (Occupational Therapy Clinical Education Services) has received Medicaid approval for billing. This approval opens the door to provide important services to additional families in the local community and expands the educational opportunities for the students.

Regalia orders must be placed by April 13, 2016 (regular pricing). Orders placed after April 13th will include a late fee of $10.00. Rental requests cannot be accommodated after April 29, 2016.

Are you an Honors student in the proposal stage of your project and wishing you had help and direction with determining your project question, the literature review or the writing process? Consider enrolling in HON 300 - CHBS Honors Research and Writing Seminar with Lucy Malenke. Students who have taken this class have given it very high marks for its impact on their projects and overall writing and research abilities. The class is limited to 15 students.
