Dear FEAST Members, Just writing to make list members aware of the national, right-wing attack on University of Oregon historian of science Mark Carey and his collaborators for their call for considering questions of gender in the science/sociology of glacier research. Their essay "Glaciers, Gender and Science" in the journal Progress in Human Geography has come under attack in prominent conservative national media, like FOX news, the Wall Street Journal, National Review, New York Post, Washington Free Beacon, Daily Caller, etc. These public attacks have been accompanied by an outpouring of hate mail sent directly to the researchers. These attacks are targeting not only feminist science research related to climate change, but the National Science Foundation which funded Carey's research. This is something all feminist scholars, but especially philosophers of science, should be following. Please disseminate widely. See Mark's email below. Researchers are thrust into the national spotlight, personally attacked, and ridiculed in national right-wing media. It's never based on anything substantive and never about the actual research, and many climate scientists say it can actually be good in the long run to be among those attacked so publicly. Some of our colleagues here at the UO and in ENVS have been through it, as most of you know. Now it's my turn. Over the last week, I have been the victim of a vicious and far-reaching international anti-academic and terribly sexist attack based on false information, misrepresentations, and lies. What started on climate skeptic/denier blogs moved to prominent conservative national media, like FOX news, the Wall Street Journal, National Review, New York Post, Washington Free Beacon, Daily Caller, etc. Gawker has been a voice of reason in all this, interestingly. The onslaught against my coauthors (including M Jackson graduate student in Geography, Sandro Antonello postdoc in the Honors College, and former ENVS/Honors College undergraduate student Jaclyn Rushing) and me is regarding our recent article that analyzes the history of glaciology from a feminist theory perspective. M and I presented this work a year ago in an ENVS brown bag. The article, "Glaciers, Gender, and Science," appeared in the journal Progress in Human Geography a couple months ago (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__phg.sagepub.com_content_early_2016_01_08_0309132515623368.abstract&d=BQICAg&c=eLbWYnpnzycBCgmb7vCI4uqNEB9RSjOdn_5nBEmmeq0&r=Oo4TCJF8pXcsWPDC7Sy8bdP2IJ6ZbST0v2xdYtuNH80&m=4sXvbEvI3Yb1V648NBuGEMwDaNE1dXaiQw5x5Flu1ZU&s=dzyGjskEchCjZnbv-Q7iqGRt9DgOURLc6dHZM_qWq24&e= ). Much of the recent media, blog, and social media attention contains lies that the National Science Foundation paid $700,000 for me to write one article -- a figure that is simply preposterous and based on nothing as 30 seconds on my webpage demonstrates. I have received a steady stream of hate emails for a week, about 2-3 per hour, which yesterday finally dropped off. But then last night I understand Mike Huckabee was complaining about feminist glaciology researchers at the University of Oregon on national television, bringing their false claims about our NSF glacier research squarely into the presidential campaign. Fortunately, Science magazine reached out to me for an interview. Yesterday Science posted the interview, titled "Author of 'feminist glaciology' study reflects on sudden appearance in culture wars," noting that I am the "latest target of conservative-leaning bloggers questioning federally funded research." So, you might be asked about this now that I'm center stage in national media, and I encourage you to please respond to anyone asking by referring them to my Science interview, rather than letting the lies win the day. And if you find yourself moved to offer positive words to the onslaught of hate emails and international attacks against us, then please feel free to reach out to Sandro, M, Jaclyn, and me with any support amidst the vitriol. Thank you so much. Mark *********************** Mark Carey Associate Dean Associate Professor of History Robert D.
