In addition to the recent photos of Sandy I posted on Facebook, I ran across these photos of her student IDs when she was a student at the University of Illinois. I thought many of you might be touched by them.

The backstory is that Sandy’s eyesight had been deteriorating rapidly over the last several years, Whenever we visited her, we had to help her find things around the apartment. That's how we stumbled across these student IDs, Sandy kindly gave us permission to photograph them for posterity, but I had forgotten about them until now.

Warm regards to all of you,
Tom

This is indeed such sad news.  I first met Sandy when we were both fellows at the Radcliffe Bunting Institute back in 1988-89 I think.  She was an amazing mentor and colleague.  As the only philosophers there we shared so much and she was incredibly insightful.  She was a gem.

Truly horrible news.

Sandy taught me so much about how to be a thinker and an activist, navigating the tensions between theory and practice with such creativity.  She helped me understand my own intellectual roots.  She showed me the legitimacy of our feminist philosophical world at a time when its alleged illegitimacy was in my face on a day-to-day basis.  She was a revolutionary.

And what a great group the early 1980's Midwest SWIP was!  There were so many truly enormous accomplishments in which Sandy had a major leadership role.

Every time we ask our students to read some of Sandra Bartky's work, we will be sustaining the blessing she bestowed.
