Yes, if such a list is complied, Eva definitely belongs on it. I don't know if anyone is actually compiling names, but if so, as another recently retired philosopher, I would like to add my name. Also Wittgenstein and Spinoza.

When I read the recent emails, I couldn’t help but think how much
I wanted to be true the mythical account of those in Denmark,
including the king and queen, who supposedly wore stars of David as
a protest against the Germans in WWII.  I do appreciate the concern
behind these ideas to send our names to the list of dangerous
philosophers.  My initial fear was that effort and time would be
spent on something that would not go beyond being trashed by the
recipient.

It would be great, though, to develop a whole list to send, with
some current and some famous past philosophers (those who’ve spent
their academic lives studying and writing on different ones could no
doubt write up fairly quickly something concise and compelling on
“their” philosophers), in an effort to instruct any readers as
to what is important in philosophy as well as what should go on in
current classrooms.  But please don’t stop with sending it to this
list.  It needs to get the broadest circulation possible.  One way
would be to send the developed list to newspapers like the NY Times,
the Huffington Post, the Washington Post, to websites that might be
relevant and fairly visible, anywhere folks can think of.

If nothing happens as a result of that effort or maybe in addition
to it, individuals could begin letter-writing campaigns, possibly
mentioning themselves and some of the historic entries, and send
those everywhere that seems appropriate.

Incidentally, I appreciate also the fear of repercussions for
sending their own names and info to the list.  As one who was
written up years ago by _Accuracy in Academia,_ a right-wing and
Moonie connected newspaper targeting liberal academics, I can attest
how unpleasant, even threatening, it is to have a former student
standing outside the class you are going to teach and handing out
“newspapers” falsely claiming that you mistreated him and that
he had been forced to correct the falsehoods you had been teaching.
The student was upset first, I suppose, by my assigning a short
piece by Simone de Beauvoir—the course was existentialism--but
mainly by that fact that I had not given him the great grade he
thought he deserved for the superficial and ad hominem-filled paper
he had written on it.  Unfortunately, his Walter Mitty version of
events and his dissemination of it probably seems mild given what is
going on in our society today (with death threats and such), but it
does make plain how difficult it is to avoid being singled out.

My first thought was to create a “Professors to Watch” watchlist

highlight their philosophical arguments or pedagogy or testimonies
from their students about how/what they learned in their classes.

There are infinite things a website like this could do to offer a
counter-narrative to the one promoted by Turning Point. Such a
website could also serve as a basic educational tool for the broader
public about philosophy and ethics with definitions about a variety
of things that are increasingly contested in society (ie – facts,
opinion, argument, assertion, liberal feminism, intersectionality).

I can’t help but think of him as a student who’s ranting without
thinking but might be persuaded to start thinking.  So I just went
to the “contact us” form on the site, gave my full name and
contact info, and wrote this:

I am curious about the Professor Watchlist. I cannot find anywhere
on your site a definition of what a "radical agenda" would be. Would
that include advocating for democratic self-rule? Plato thought that
was radical and wrong. Thomas Jeffersond did not. Does Mr. Kirk?

Also I do not see evidence at all of conservative students being
discriminated against. Do you have any such evidence? Most colleges
and universities have avenues for students to complain if they are
being discriminated against.

I see that you have taken down the rhetoric about people being
"un-American" and that's good. Certainly speaking up for one's
principles is very American -- but also note that having evidence to
back up one's claim is the hallmark of what good professors do,
including all the ones I know on your list.

You have included my colleague George Yancy on your list but with
absolutely no evidence of any kind that he is promoting anything
radical in his classroom or that he has discriminated against any of
his student. I gather you, Mr. Kirk, are trying to educate yourself.
I applaud that. Perhaps you could take a philosophy course to learn
about reasoned argumentation and also the fallacy of trying to tar
someone with inflammatory innuendo. Mr. Kirk seems like someone with
such promise. I would be happy to talk with him. Honestly. I have
left my number here in the form.

I’ll let you all know if I hear back!
