I don't know the APA's current position on political petitions (though no doubt someone on this listerv knows), but my hunch is that the organization is authorized to ask for our support only if it's somehow "profession related."   I can remember times in the distant past (e.g., Vietnam war, long before email was common!) when there were heated debates on the APA's scope in matters of social justice.

The NEH does "public humanities" programming in every state in the country--it's not just about professors. I agree with Noelle's post.
Plus I think that any issue, high or low priority, that will motivate a philosopher to contact her/his representatives is a good thing--especially for people who live in states where members of congress hate the NEH and support much of the rest of DT's agenda.

I respectfully disagree. Yes there are many priorities  -- but they are all connected and not at all mutually exclusive. To all my very good FEAST friends —  I was astonished to receive this from the APA today — its first post- T(yrant) missive to me.  Compared to all the really awful things T is doing — advocating torture, reinstating  black sites, barring refugees on grounds of religion/country of origin, building the “stupid wall” as Elizabeth Warren called it —  I’m appalled that the APA is worried about NEH fellowships for the likes of us very privileged professionals.  This is a low priority for me.  Can the APA be convinced to address values and justice questions that matter to desperately vulnerable people?  I’d like that.  Diana

Subject: NHA action alert: Oppose the elimination of NEH

American Philosophical Association

Dear Diana,

There are reports that the Trump Administration is considering a budget blueprint that would call for the elimination of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

This is the time to let President Trump and your Members of Congress know that you support the NEH!

Learn more about this blueprint and plans to stop it here.

We are asking supporters of the humanities to email and/or call their Members of Congress and the White House to express support for NEH.

The National Humanities Alliance has created an email and phone patch-through system to make it quick and easy to contact your representatives. I urge you to take advantage of the system to call and email today.

All the best,
