I am usually quiet on this list, but (in agreement with the last two responses, below) the elimination of all types of funding is of great relevance to all of us. Allow me to cite as an example a colleague in another area of my university who found out yesterday that her research team’s EPA funding has been pulled in the middle of the funded research (she has already received some of the funding, but no further checks will be written); this was with no warning or explanation; and when she called the EPA they were not allowed to speak with her due to a gag order. There are hiring freezes and instances of revoked funding in all areas considered “inessential,” and I would imagine those are directly related to the pages disappeared from the White House website the day after the inauguration: Namely, environmental, civil rights, and LGBTQ rights. I can remember times in the distant past (e.g., Vietnam war, long before email was common!) when there were heated debates on the APA's scope in matters of social justice. The NEH does "public humanities" programming in every state in the country--it's not just about professors. I agree with Noelle's post. Plus I think that any issue, high or low priority, that will motivate a philosopher to contact her/his representatives is a good thing--especially for people who live in states where members of congress hate the NEH and support much of the rest of DT's agenda.
