CFP: Society for LGBTQ Philosophy, APA Pacific Division Meeting

March 28th to April 1st, 2018 in San Diego, California

Topic: LGBTQ Sex and Love

While frequently canonized texts in the history of Philosophy such as Plato’s Symposium foreground philosophical conversations about sex and love, the subject has also received a renewed interest in contemporary scholarship. This includes edited volumes such as New Philosophies of Sex and Love (December 2016) and Hypatia’s Special Issue on Feminist Love Studies (Winter 2017), as well as a rising number of popular courses on Philosophy, love, and sex worldwide. Concurrently, love and sex continues to be highly politicized for LGBTQ people in areas such as relationships, reproduction, sex work, the continued criminalization of bodies and sex practices, and the ongoing effects of discrimination based on HIV/AIDS status across the world.

For the upcoming Pacific Division Meeting of the APA, the Society for LGBTQ Philosophy welcomes submissions for panel and/or paper abstracts on topics related to the theme of LGBTQ sex and/or love. We invite submissions from all areas of philosophy (broadly construed) that consider the ongoing relevance of sex and love for LGBTQ lives, including (but not limited to) intersections with studies of institutional control/violence (prisons, healthcare, police), resistance and activism, decolonial thought, and transnational politics.
