Thanks for clarification. I tend to think of mind more in connection to human consciousness but see the point..

Peace

Hi Dad,

Thanks for the proof read. I appreciate that, and since it was typed out fairly quickly, I am sure there are a numbers of errors along those lines. Helps very much to catch them because it is likely that I will turn it into a blog.

I am not sure you are reading the diagram as it is intended. I am guessing that you are likely probably not referring to what I am when using the term “mind.” You are likely using is more colloquially, where in everyday conversation it tends to refer to the seat of (human?) consciousness and subjectivity. That is NOT what mind means here, for a host of reasons.

“Mind,” as defined by the ToK (which essentially refers to animals with brains that move around and learn), is clearly emerging approximately 600,000,000 years ago in the context of the Cambrian Explosion. So, in that sense “Mind” is much older than 5 million years. And by 5 million years ago, the dimension of Mind (again, always in ToK land, Mind = Animal) is fully present.

Then, between 5 mil years ago and the present (and, generally, taking off 50,000 years ago and really accelerating through the last 5,000 years) is Culture and the behavioral patterns and properties of modern human persons.

For clarity, this conversation occurs in the fourth dimension of complexity, Culture on the diagram. In contrast, if you cut your hand and feel the pain of the rip in your skin, that experience is a third mental dimensional phenomena. Dogs exist on the third dimension and almost certainly feel the pain of getting their paw crushed. However, no dog has ever asked for clarification regarding a diagram.

Although it might be confusing, it also is the case that it is important that folks learn to change the meaning of the term mind if they are going to get the correct picture of the universe and consciousness. Using mind to refer to human self-consciousness or even consciousness more generally is an important and common conceptual error that needs to be updated for more effective language systems.

Peace,
 G

Signed up. Don't have time to go into the Garden in much detail now but I just went in to see how you did it.

In your diagram you have mind coming at 5 million years ago. That sounded very far back to me. Am I mistaken? And I noted an error in the following quote   However, what makes the ToK System is unique in that it depicts cosmic evolution as occurring in four distinguishable phases, Matter, Life, Mind, and Culture.  The word "is" before unique should be removed, and "in" after unique should be "is." I only mention it because I don't know how carefully it has been proofed. I know I am constantly finding this type of mistake in my drafts.

Your ability for productive work continues to amaze.

Love you,

Dad

Dear TOK Society List,

In leading up to the Big Theory of Knowledge conference, I am going to be following Steve Q’s wonderful “episode” format, and will be taking you through UTUA: A Tour of the Garden. I am currently planning on four episodes.

Attached is Episode I of the Garden Tour: Introduction and Overview via FAQs.

I welcome comments, reactions or questions.

Warm regards to all,
 Gregg
