Interestingly --- particularly in the context of a ToK discussion group --- Jung's motivation for developing his theory of personality type was to unify the theories of Freud and Adler, (along with his own theories).

His view was that the contention between Freud and Adler was grounded in them having different personality types. In a manner of speaking, he saw a fragmentation in psychology as ultimately rooted in the different "psyches" of different psychologists.
