I enjoyed the piece by Brooks as well. I have a somewhat similar, but importantly different alternative to individualism. It is based on the concept of collective identity and the idea that our individual identities are socially constituted. Just in case anyone has interest in a rather academic account of collective identity and its evolution, neuroscience, and moral core (or just needs a soporific), I've plucked a chapter from my book The Evolution of Ethics.

I guess I've long struggled to convey precisely that narrative to change the conversation among the extremists at either end of the individualist-collectivist continuum. Thanks again, -Joe

I am not, in general, a David Brooks fan. But his article on "personalism," sent by Gregg, is right-on in IMHO.
And here is a HuffPo essay of mine, from May 2017, on virtually the same topic:

############################Hi List,
Don’t mean to clog the email, but I wanted to share this post by David Brooks on the Philosophy of Personalism:
I have been in individual conversations with many of you about the possible thrust of the TOK Society and one of the issues that pops up over and over again is developing a statement about the current state of affairs and the direction we should be headed in in terms of relational structure, knowledge, wisdom, science and philosophy. This is the kind of article that provides some shared reference point for thinking about these issues, and I hope at some point we will be able to issue some sort of joint statement.
Best,Gregg
