Waldemar &al: I wonder how many on this list are old enough to remember the last "counter-culture" in the 1960s (and what they were doing then)? In the summer of 1969, a new "underground" newspaper -- Madison Kaleidoscope -- launched in Madtown, WI, when I was about to enter my senior year at UW-Mad (majoring in evolutionary genetics and Buddhist theology), at roughly the same time that I married my high-school sweetheart, Laura Hanson at the local Frank Lloyd Wright Unitarian Church (a Norwegian descendant, whose father was the top ICC lawyer in the state, with a swimming pool in their back yard on the Westside.) Within a few months, I would be arrested for assisting in the design of an underground drug laboratory (yes, I was talented at organic synthesis, or what today would be called "cooking") -- with police knocking down my backdoor in the middle of the night and held in solitary confinement -- then declared innocent, since the drugs involved were still legal (with all records expunged, thanks to the help of Laura's father), only to have the FBI files resurface when I was fingerprinted for my job on Wall Street in 1985. Those were fun times . . . <g> It began with a *Manifesto: Toward a New Culture* which had this to say -- I. The myth is that the American People are not paying for their share of Imperialism. They are paying on Lake Mendota [where I used to sail and ice-skate] where sunburned men in their forties get hardons revving up their speedboats . . . II. "Politics" is near-dead, poisoned like the fish in Wisconsin rivers -- all the oil and sewage and chemicals of Twentieth Century Progress poured into their veins. When SDS [the local NCLC chapter of which I would later start] talks "politics" we wait for the Now We Know About America speech . . . III. We want a Movement which flows from our lives. American Capitalism says Bourgeois Sentimentality and a Quick Fuck; we say madlove and genital embrace, for hours, weeks months . . . IV. We want a Movement which flows from our lives. The dance of life in a bicycle parade [I would also later found the Yellow Jersey Bicycle Coop, my comrades having rejected my suggestion of "Hammer & Cycle"] not the Dance of Death in the ballet of police clubbing gassing fearing/hating . . . V. We want a Movement which flows from our lives. We WILL have something more fundamental than voting/masturbating and IN OUR LIFETIMES . . . PANHISTORIC PREVISION - TOWARD A NEW CULTURE. Let our Movement inscribe on society's diaphragms and skyscrappers: WE WILL BRING TO BIRTH A NEW WORLD FROM THE ASHES OF THE OLD DOUCHE-BAGS, TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES, AUTOMOBILE GRAVEYARDS AND CROSSYOUR HEART BRAS. We will create a New Culture as we prepare for Revolution, finding allies in those sectors -- notably the blacks and industrial working class families -- most capable of realizing themselves in and for the collective tasks ahead. We have begun to appear in a thousand guises across the world from the Red Guard [today I'm working with the Chinese government, composed largely of those sent to the country-side by the Red Guards] to the American Underground [likely referring to the Weathermen, a leader of which was accused of supporting Barack Obama]. WE ARE THE TROJAN HORSE OF OUR TIMES. WE RIP OFF TROJANS [referring to the brand of condoms]. "Transform the World," said Marx. "Change the Mind," said Rimbaud [about whom Marshall McLuhan, who rejected Marxism at Cambridge, instead wound up studying the French Symbolists] "These are equally necessary for us to perform. Andre Breton [the surrealist, a poet from a very different paradigm] https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__voices.revealdigital.com_cgi-2Dbin_independentvoices-3Fa-3Dd-26d-3DBHFGEAC19690623-26e-3D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2Den-2D20-2D-2D1-2D-2Dtxt-2DtxIN-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D-2D1-23&d=DwIFaQ&c=eLbWYnpnzycBCgmb7vCI4uqNEB9RSjOdn_5nBEmmeq0&r=HPo1IXYDhKClogP-UOpybo6Cfxxz-jIYBgjO2gOz4-A&m=abPYMuDMtjupjhWVN90_0SmvdSl8azakG2l77IY_8YI&s=UN2MgB4CtpH6KlopqsIv27wOQFosf9Xa8Ed2YqO4V3M&e= Mark Quoting [log in to unmask]: > Mark: > > Thank you for your reply. > I await expectantly! > > Best regards, > > Waldemar > > Waldemar A Schmidt, PhD, MD > (Perseveret et Percipiunt) > 503.631.8044 > > Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.
