Responsibilities include new course development, teaching Feminist Inquiry (WGST 300) and Feminist Methodology (WGST 540), and enhancing departmental connections with community organizations. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester, with opportunities for research support. The EMU Women’s and Gender Studies Department was founded as a program in 1975, offered Michigan’s first Minor in Women’s Studies, and became a department in 2009. The department currently offers an undergraduate major and minor in Women’s and Gender Studies, a Queer Studies minor, an MA in Women’s and Gender Studies, and a graduate certificate in Sexualities or Globalization. The department is interdisciplinary, with its own dedicated faculty and department members from colleges across the University and the University Library. The EMU student body is one of the most racially and ethnically diverse in Michigan, and EMU is recognized as a Premier LGBTQ-friendly campus by the Campus Pride Index.
