While reading this trail I keep thinking what Sue Weinberg - for many years the backbone, for some periods single handedly, sustaining NYSWIP - would think, she sure would have a thing or two in mind about trying to get SWIP to centralise! There are good reasons for keeping locality of group formation in the foreground, but I can't expound on that principle, Sue could. Not everyone shares the institutional memory of SWIP, but it's not by accident that it's exclusive and local, but that need not exclude inclusive and expansion. Sue would know how to have both.An annual prize to recognise those who sustain feminist institutional solidarity - through their tenacious commitment to organisational consistency through invisible backroom hard work, or through under-publicized scholarship - in her honour, or a one-off posthumous recognition to Sue wouldn't go amiss.RIPhelenOn Thursday, March 14, 2019, 4:12:25 AM GMT+3, Eva Kittay <[log in to unmask]> wrote:I agree w Ann and w the suggestion that there be one SWIP, and I would add smaller regional SWIP’s like NYSWIP that are useful sites for feminist philosophers to gather.Eva KittaySent from my iPhoneis there some reason this discussion is on the FEAST list and on the SWIP-L?might be worth switching!while i'm here, I think it's a great idea to consolidate. I concur with others that SWIP has value as the one long-standing feminist philosophy organization that intentionally cuts across all the categories.ann############################Sorry, I forgot I was replying to the FEAST list when I explained about FEAST. I just wanted to add that in the olden days SWIP was really the only organization supporting feminist scholarship. Now there are quite a few (SAF, FAB, FEAST, etc.), many of which cater to specializations within feminist philosophy. It might be worth thinking about what SWIP’s role and purpose might be given this proliferation.

Perhaps those more in the know about this than I can chime in:
The Society for Analytic Feminism (SAF) seems to be going strong. It does not have a divisional structure, nor does it sponsor a conference regularly. It does, however, organize sessions at all of the APA’s. My experience is that they are well-attended.
FEAST (Feminist Ethics and Social Theory) is also going strong. Its main task is to sponsor a biennial conference, which is also well-attended in my experience.
Maybe SWIP would benefit from following one of these two models.

Dear Colleagues,
Would eliminating the divisional structure of SWIP perhaps help to revive it?
There could be a single administrative body/officers and the conference could perhaps meet in a different region each year, depending upon whose institutions could support and host the meeting.
Just a thought.
