John,

  Thanks.

Let me share that, from a ToK and Justification Systems Theory (JUST) perspective on epistemology, there is not a hard and fast line or straight dichotomy between errant “rationalizations” and authentic True “knowledge.” Rather, we want to place things on a  dimension of “justification,” which allows us to first characterize what kind of thing linguistic propositions are (all verbal meaning making propositions are justifications). And such propositions can be placed on a continuum of justification that ranges on the one end from lying (known falsehoods) to rationalizing (hiding needs, giving reasons) to the more middle “truth value” of offering opinions and practical/social reasons to formulating systematic arguments to developing coherent logically consistent systems (like math) to developing correspondence between propositional systems and empirical findings (something like general relativity would serving as an example of a “true” justification system, in that it meets the highest standards of epistemology even as we can be confident it is not the final Truth of the universe).

With that clarification, I certainly agree that we want to move from wishful rationalizations and the current confusion that is dominated by ego-based needs and Emotional Warfare to much more accurate and morally defensible states of justification that can be perhaps characterized as “knowledge-into-wisdom.”

Best,
Gregg

Dear Gregg and ToK, regarding Gregg's excellent article addressing Wilson's "Consilience" and the ToK, as I have said before, there must IMHO be recognition that our present and future are based on our past, literally, because that's how evolution works folks. Wilson superficially and glibly said that if all knowledge is being reduced to 'one's and zero's' that there is opportunity to integrate all of it as a whole. But I submit that he's talking about information, not knowledge, so all that you've got is a fancy 'index' without a way of formulating thought as knowledge. In the same vein, the ToK needs the mechanistic connections between the levels from matter to consciousness in order to gain the historic 'arc' of psychology. To only 'justify' our actions without recognizing their historic origins and processes is to rationalize, not 'know'. Respectfully, John Torday

Thanks for this note. The relationship between the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, and biology) and the human/social sciences (sociology, anthropology, economics, & political science) and the humanities (literature, the arts) and, as you well know, the more recent “philosophy of design” view is absolutely central to our endeavor. The hope is that, with its novel approach to the problem of psychology, ToK System can resolves many of the issues that have tripped us up in the past (see, e.g., The Problem of Psychology and the Integration of Human Knowledge: Contrasting Wilson’s Consilience with the Tree of Knowledge System).

I look forward to hearing your contributions about the concept/philosophy of design and the professional practice of psychology.

Best,
Gregg

Dear all,

it sounds promising, as knowledge becomes more and more specialized and we risks to loose the big picture and the connected nature of human and natural events.

I think the blog is particularly important in that opens up the possibility to challenge the "naturalistic turn" social and human sciences seem to have endorsed, in the hope to be as credible as the natural sciences. We need a frame to ground the autonomy of human sciences.

I'm really looking forward to see some of you in Harrisonburg!

Bye,

Dear TOK Society Members,

I am pleased to share with you a blog the TOK Executive Committee (i.e., Edward Kroger, Joe Michalski, Steve Quackenbush, Waldemar Schmidt and myself) published this morning, titled Toward an Age of Clarity: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/theory-knowledge/201903/toward-the-age-clarity

Please check it out and share as broadly as possible. We think this is an important message to disseminate and get people talking about. Here is the “preface”:

In an ideologically-fractured culture, it is all-too-easy to lose sight of our common humanity. While there are many reasons for our collective failure to achieve consensus in the spheres of ethics and politics, we believe that our current spiritual malaise reflects, at least in part, a breakdown in our very capacity to share wisdom. As such, we believe it is important to find ways to communicate that free us from unnecessary confusions and allow bridges to be built between refined knowledge systems and fundamental common-sense propositions. In short, if our society is to move from confusion to clarity, wisdom must be consolidated and shared in a way that fosters understanding and collective well-being.

Would love to hear reactions or thoughts or hopes if people have them.

Best,

Gregg
