As per your question, dear Jason, the superego-ego-id tripartion is a
logical one allowing for the ego to become the battleground between
experiences and values that it obviously serves as.
The ego experience could even be described as a temporary solution to
problem-solving, one ego momenta at a time. No wonder people who smoke a
ton of weed and "feel relaxed" also lose any sense of "self".
However these three levels are then of course incredibly affected by the
information-technological environment in which they occur.
So while the superego was "the elders" or even "the elders of the elders"
("the gods") in the sociont, the original nomadic tribe, then with the
arrival of written language, the superego becomes "the law" as Freud and
Lacan correctly point out. Today we are increasingly moving into a world
where superego is "the algorithm". An injunction which is costly but
rewarding to oppose.
Meanwhile "the id" is drive expressed as mind, or as Nietzsche would say
"the animal within the human". And still is, even if psychiatric drugs aim
to alter that too. Freud's word for that is of course "castration".
