Marymount Manhattan College (MMC) seeks a scholar-activist with a focus on public philosophy, incarceration, and social justice issues to serve as a Ferraro Fellow in MMC’s Geraldine A. Ferraro Institute for Breakthrough Civic Leadership while holding a visiting faculty appointment in Philosophy (open rank professor) in the Department of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. Named in honor of MMC’s best-known graduate, the Ferraro Institute is a multidisciplinary platform that draws on the College’s rich history in civic activism and leadership to promote social justice.

This is a full-time faculty appointment for a two-year term with a possible one-year extension. The start date is January 2020 (preferred) or July 2020.  Pending budget approval and additional external success in funding the position, the position might be converted to tenured or tenure-track at the end of the term, and, in the case of tenure, the candidate’s successful application to the Committee on Promotion and Tenure. The Ferraro Fellow will receive salary and benefits consistent with other MMC faculty in the appointed rank. Additionally, the Ferraro Fellow will receive team and project funds to accomplish the goals of this prestigious fellowship. The anticipated teaching load is two courses each semester, with the remainder of the course load assigned to professional activities involving MMC’s college prison programs, at the Bedford Hills and Taconic Correctional Facilities in nearby Westchester County, NY.

 Among the chief responsibilities of the Ferraro Fellow are the following:

 Developing public programming and innovative projects that connect MMC’s main campus, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, with MMC’s college prison programs, at the Bedford Hills and Taconic Correctional Facilities in nearby Westchester County, NY.

• Providing professional development opportunities to faculty members who are teaching courses in MMC’s college prison programs and/or are teaching courses on MMC’s main campus that relate to or interact with the college prison courses.
• Teaching courses in MMC’s prison education programs and providing general academic oversight over these programs.
• Teaching courses in the Department of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies on some combination of public philosophy, social and political philosophy, philosophy of race, and other courses of interest.
• Collaborate with colleagues in the Department of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies in revising the major in Philosophy and Religious Studies with a focus on public philosophy and engaged scholarship.

Qualified candidates will hold an earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Philosophy or in areas relevant to the position. (Applicants nearing the completion of the doctorate [ABD] with an expectation of degree completion by August 31, 2019 may be considered.) Qualified candidates will have higher education teaching experience and demonstrated experience as a public philosopher knowledgeable in both developing public programing and in faculty development involving engaged pedagogies. They will also possess demonstrated experience applying philosophy—Western and/or global—to pressing public issues connected to incarceration, de-incarceration, college prison programs, and related policy issues, and will have a relevant and active research agenda. The ability to contribute to course offerings in the College’s upper-level Racial and Ethnic Perspectives category is strongly preferred, along with the capacity to contribute to other programs at the College, such as the major in Politics and Human Rights; the concentration in Religious Studies; and the minors in Justice Studies, Social Work, and/or Law and Ethics.
