  As someone who worked on the “mean streets” of Philadelphia for 4 years I can say that the structural issues facing the poor are brutal and unjust and we should be doing much more to cultivate an infrastructure that fosters growth rather than one that emphasizes punishment and control. I have huge respect for folks who devote their lives to these kinds of issues.
