But we have to be willing to both take science seriously AND find the moral courage to, as Mike says, "cultivate the common good." I have always believed, however naively, that literally everyone has a biological, psychological, sociocultural AND moral reality that can be nurtured and directed toward the "light" (shorthand, sorry!). My simplistic view has been that we can nurture the different facets of our complex "humanness" and grow and shine our lights ever more brightly, but that requires healthy relational supports too. Unfortunately, we live in complex webs of relationships and sometimes the forces at play do NOT encourage growth, kindness, and a bending of our humanity toward the light. In our best moments and with our best "selves," we are able to shine our lights, to share our gifts, etc. And I genuinely believe that everyone has gifts to share, again, if nurtured and supported (e.g., imagine what Trump could do with his gifts if he weren't so damaged - seriously!). Anyway, long story short, I've spent my adult life being a professor, a sports coach since 1981, etc. Parenting a bunch of boys & trying to, as Spike Lee might suggest, "Do the Right Thing." But I've been sitting on something special for about 40 years and I honestly NEVER thought I'd have the courage to share this something, partly because it's so personal and partly because I just figured, like Sara McLachlan has sung, "there's always some reason to feel not good enough." But then it hit me: I have a special gift that I could share with people just about anywhere that might bring some real light into their lives and even change their worlds. Isn't that the goal of our teaching and professional lives and coaching and certainly parenting? But I've published dozens of academic articles and almost no one reads them, so I realize that activity only has a very localistic appeal to specialists in my field. But what does almost everyone enjoy? Music! And, yes, music has a place in the ToK too! So, I'm going to share with this list that on Friday, May 1, I am launching a web-based, one-week course that will teach people to play piano literally in one week, even if they've never studied music and cannot read a note (in fact, it's BETTER if they can't read music - I can't either!). It's free, of course. And it's different. The same, in some ways, but different. And that's why this will work, because it's a replication of how I figured out how to play piano literally in a weekend many years ago. I told my mother and she didn't believe me, until I took her to the church where I figured out the piano and she was amazed: "How did you do that in just one weekend?" Well, I've never really shared the secret. It's almost like I was sitting on this well of the purest water and hoarding only for myself, while people are thirsty everywhere else.
