Hi folks. DC makes the case once again, bringing in a lot of history and his personal connections. Powerful stuff. On the bright side, the recent polling data indicate a shift toward a greater acknowledgement of racism as a problem, while support for BLM has increased significantly. "A Monmouth University poll found that 76 percent of Americans consider racism and discrimination a “big problem,” up 26 points from 2015. The poll found that 57 percent of voters thought the anger behind the demonstrations was fully justified, while a further 21 percent called it somewhat justified." But there are reasons to think that the Black Lives Matter movement might be different. For one, the shift continues a long-term trend in public opinion that preceded the death of Mr. Floyd.

On the other hand, I have to ask how prevalent are the attitudes and actions of those captured in the following video from Bethel, Ohio.
Do most Trump supporters or Republicans in general share the opinions of the counter-protesters? What % of U.S. adults holds similar views?

According to the latest Rasmussen poll, exactly one in three respondents "strongly approve" of Trump & 46% approve overall. But what's life like for people 'on the ground' in their everyday worlds & if they feel compelled to retreat to the comfort of their own tribes & their own echo chambers? And that same reasoning applies to all of us. For example, as a department chair and then as a dean at my university, I'd often preface hiring committee meetings w/ a comment along the lines of, "Well, just as a reminder, we need to think beyond our own personal interests & preferences to imagine how we might diversify and strengthen our institution by bringing in different voices. For example, we already have 'me' and the type of work that I do, so we definitely don't need to hire another 'Joe Michalski.' Instead, I'd ask everyone to think about the gaps in our curriculum and what we're missing." And guess what? Nine times out of 10 we'd end up hiring someone pretty much just like the majority, or someone who would "fit in" with the dominant group. Someone that people "really liked" and who would "fit in" really well. But do you see the problem? And this is among well-educated & presumably "enlightened" academicians with PhDs. But they have their own tribes too. Try to convince them otherwise... At least metaphorically if not literally, I've seen the same "mob mentality" as what you see in the Bethel video - and often various forms of violence too.

Two positive notes, though. First, there's the ToK list & other similar groups where we can be critical of ourselves in the best senses and be self-reflective individuals striving to live out Gregg's mantra to "be that which enhances dignity and well-being with integrity." Second, the polling evidence and a great deal of anecdotal info points to the greater openness, creative & progressive views of our younger cohorts. I'm especially optimistic when I think of what the world will look like in 20 years when the "under 30" crowd today ascends to the top positions of leadership in government, business, and civil society. I, for one, will be more than happy to step aside!

Finally, a personal anecdote. When one of my sons joined the Canadian military a few years ago to serve in the reserves, I remember thinking, "I hope he never has to be called up to serve in a hot zone. If he did, I'd much rather volunteer myself." I remember thinking too how crazy to send our young people out to fight wars, given that: a) they'd then have to live with the consequences far longer, i.e., most of their lives (if they lived); and b) how it should be old people like me who should be out there fighting since we're the ones making the decisions to enter into military conflicts (i.e., we should put our own lives on the line if we deemed war or violent conflict the most apposite strategy for resolving international conflicts). Anyway, he ended up completing his basic training, earned high marks as a "sharp shooter," & then earned the option to continue to serve in basically whatever capacity he preferred. His choice? He decided to continue in the reserves as a "musician," playing at all kinds of ceremonies, etc. And that's what he chose to do for the last 4 years: he's officially - and I'm not making this up - "Musician Michalski." That's an actual rank. Alas, but then I remembered the final episode of M*A*S*h*, where Winchester was moved to try to teach five soldiers Mozart's clarinet quintet - only to learn what happened to his pupils in this devastating "Coda" - which is why he does what he does to the record at the end of this clip. The music no longer carries for him the joy and beauty it once had:
