I am indebted to Zak for a number of things, including his brilliant insights about education, teacherly authority and the relevance of intergenerational transmission of knowledge in this time between worlds. But I am also grateful because he used metapsychology last year for me in a way that sparked recognition that I should be framing the UTOK as a kind of metapsychology, which I have been doing in several venues. His review of the field in the lecture is powerful. If you have any doubts how convoluted the field of psychology is and how tangled it is, listen to his reflections and know that he and I basically had the same reaction to our field in graduate school. It is a clusterf#ck of confusion that cannot be sorted simply by applying the empirical method, however valuable that might be. Also, I have found his “big three” of transcendence, ensoulment and development to have much pragmatic value. His conversation with Daniel T on Emerge (see here<https://anchor.fm/emerge/episodes/Zak-Stein---American-Cultures-Psychotic-Break-pt--1-eg8oha>), offered a great illustration of how it can be applied to one’s lifeworld. That is, a full, balanced lifeworld-lifequest will be one that embraces the transcendent, skill development, and ensoulment domains of human being, doing, and becoming.
