My memories:  I served as Assistant Director of the Ethics Center at USF while Peter French was the director.  Margaret Walker had a visiting fellowship and was completing “Moral Understandings” the two years she was there.  Peter asked me to arrange conferences as part of my duties in the Ethics Center.  In particular, he asked that I organize an “Ethics and Popular Media” conference my first year on the job.  I did so, but the next time I needed to organize a conference I asked if Margaret and I could choose the topic.  We settled on “Feminist Ethics Revisited” to build on the earlier conference in Duluth.  Peter supported the idea, but the conference itself was self-supporting from registration fees.  I even managed to find and arrange for the Clearwater venue.  :)  Joanne Waugh also helped organize the conference and served as the co-editor with me of the volume that came out of that conference, “Feminists Doing Ethics”.

I did not take part in any hot tub discussions, but I was there at a big outdoor lunch table with Joan Callahan, Margaret Walker, Peter French, and many others.  As I recall, that’s when the name “FEAST” was first mentioned by Joan Callahan to enthusiastic reponse.

Yes, my memory is that Peggy and Margaret Walker had fellowships or something at a Florida Ethics Center run by Peter French, then editor of Journal of Social Philosophy. I think Peter provided some startup funds. I have copied Petty and Margaret in here. I hope they will provide a fuller story. I believe we owe the name FEAST to Joan Callahan--and the hot tub!

Best,

We owe Peggy DesAutels and her colleagues gratitude for organizing and supporting that first "pre-FEAST" conference!
Thanks to Asha and all who have developed the organization into the thriving group it is today!

Yes, it was so awful — all those founding meeting 😀😄😄.  Besides the hot tub and the walks on the beach we had a great time because we were happy to be with one another, and we felt we are doing something to open up philosophy to different voices.  Add Anita Silvers to the founding mothers list.

I truly value your words of appreciation, Ann, Alison, Eva, Margaret, and everyone who has communicated with me privately. Let me also add my thanks to everyone who has contributed to FEAST over the years.

It is good to be reminded of the origins of FEAST. I think many of us have heard parts of the stories of its founding over the years, and – to build on Alison and Eva’s comments -  I’ve heard that Hilde Lindemann, Diana Tietjens Meyers, Bat-Ami Bar On, Rosie Tong and Lisa T. were also founding mothers of the organization, where the founding included the afternoon garden / lunch conversations, the late evening hot tub meeting, and an organizing meeting held in Boston at the eastern APA.

All the best,
Asha

Thanks Eva. Just to say that my version of FEAST's origins story has the association founded not around a lunch table in Florida but instead in a late evening hot tub! However, we certainly had no financing and no institutional backing. Our founding mothers included Margaret Walker, Peggy DesAutels, and Joan Callahan. I'm sure they are happy to see FEAST going from strength to strength.

Dear Asha,
Count me in among the many who thank you and are grateful for your work.  How very impressive that this humble association, started around a lunch table in a Florida resort hosting the first gathering of feminists doing ethics, with no financing and no institutional backing, now has such a sturdy structure. I am truly impressed and pleased, and look forward to the many years of excellent work that can be built on this foundation.

Happy New Years to all my Feastie friends, and lets hope we can make this a  better new year.
Eva

I join Ann in sending appreciation to Asha for her leadership and to all the other people on the FEAST Steering and Program Committees. Committee work is in some ways the housework of our profession--crucial to sustaining our shared life but often invisible and underappreciated. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to developing FEAST's distinctive identity over the past few years.

As 2020 comes to its end, I am also concluding my term as FEAST Chair. I leave the organization with newly acquired status as a 501c(4), with a new mission statement, and two new steering committee positions – the Development Officer and Social Media Outreach Chair. Having pursued several of these initiatives with the aim of better support emerging scholars from diverse and underrepresented populations, I am happy that a secure foundation for our next set of initiatives is now in place.

I have been lucky to work with a truly excellent steering committee and conference program co-chairs. In addition to our recently elected steering committee members, several steering committee members continue to serve in or have taken on new roles. Many thanks to each and every one of them for their dedication to fostering the intellectual community of FEAST.

Shay Welch will now be FEAST Chair to continue this important work for our community. Because of Shay’s longstanding dedication to FEAST, which includes serving in numerous roles in the steering committee over the course of several, I have complete confidence that FEAST will be in great hands with Shay at its helm.

Finally, I want to recognize the steering committee members whose terms also end today, and whose contributions have been indispensable to the current vitality of FEAST:

Keya Maitra as Treasurer
Jeanine Weekes Schroer as Web Committee Chair
Ranjoo Herr as International Committee Chair
Christine Wieseler as Access Committee Chair
Xhercis Mendez and Dianna Taylor as At Large members
Jamie Ritzo as Graduate Student Representative

Thank you to each of them, and to our continuing and newly elected steering committee members for their service to the profession.

In solidarity, and with hope for the coming year,
Asha
