Ok, I get it.
Studying the ToK diagram more in depth though, I was wondering about its timeline.: 13.7 billions year ago, the Big Bang, for sure.
But then things go confusing. There should be three other joint points, i.e. Life (4 billions) Mind (550 millions) Culture (about 50 thousand years).
On the contrary, there are "strange" numbers (700 millions, 5 millions, that moreover do not match with the emergence depicted above them)

Why is this so?

Thank you,
A

Hi Andrea,

I can empathize with that reaction. It took me a while to “grok” what Bard was saying. However, now that I have read his books, and seen him on many podcasts and been on his list, I now have a deep appreciation for the depth of his knowledge and vision. His vision is very much aligned with the basic ToK ontology. Indeed, I would like to think Bard was thinking of me when he said that when he as a question about psychology, he has “the best” people he can go to 😊. Indeed, he is referencing the ToK in his latest work, and now talks about Mind and Culture instead of consciousness.

In the podcast he speaks of the “four gods of syntheism”. As we shared on his list a while back, they align well with different aspects of the ToK. See attached.

Best,
Gregg

Hi G,

I've seen it all. It is undoubtedly interesting, although sometimes the tone and the content of the discourse do not resonate with me.

I also shall add that, while fully appreciating the "pathos" and "mythos" frames, it seems that here the "logos" part is somewhat lacking, but maybe this is a misconception due to my ignorance of Bard's work. In other words: I prefer meta theories that are more directly concerned with a naturalistic ontology.

I do not believe that the naturalistic ontology is "all that matters", of course - for the record I am more and more approaching panpsychist assumptions - but, in my sensibility, such discourses are too much disanchored from the naturalistic ontology.

Best,

A

Hi TOK Folks,

As long time TOK members know, Alexander Bard was is an honorary TOK Society member. He used to regularly participate on this list, but left after what might be considered some less than cautious remarks, of which Bard some times makes. But I love Bard and think he is brilliant. He has an active “intellectual deep web” list that I and several TOK members follow.

I bring this up because Layman Pascal and Bruce Alderman just released a great interview with Bard. Indeed, having heard a number of podcasts with Bard, I think this one represents a very clear articulation of his philosophy. For those who are interested in his perspective I strongly encourage folks to check this out:
