I'm really not sure how you came to that conclusion about action research,
Michael, from what I wrote.  The reason why   action research is often not
seen as proper research is because it does not meet positivist criteria for
'proper' scientific research .  The 'goal' of AR is usually quite
generalised, e.g. 'improving planetary wellbeing' (or could be less grand
and more specific, such as 'improving my practice as a teacher'.)  But
certainly not SMART goals.  Action research is basically a values based
process that aims to integrate theory and practice.   So are you
representing theory and practice as Scylla and Charybdis?  If so, then I
would want to say that this, to me, is the essence of the problem, when
theory and practice are seen as separate and in opposition to each
other, rather than in a mutually informing relationship.
