What criteria should be used to decide who to honor with awards? What types of scientific advancements should be considered? Who is qualified to make the decisions on who to honor and for what? How much stock should the public give to people who win such awards? The Nobel is the most prestigious, but should other awards be seen as deserving of equal or more prestige? I would hope that these scientific awards are given on the basis of genuine scientific advancements and that they don’t take into account other factors such as personality or insider connections. The Oscars are awarded on the basis of aesthetics and people argue about that all the time. Do scientific achievements also depend in part on aesthetics? Does our society really need scientific awards anyways? I figure that we do, since this is useful for non-scientific people to help them understand the role that scientific advancements play in our world. That is why I think these questions are important and that questions such as these should be taken seriously within public discourse. Maybe Gregg could have someone on UTOKing who could speak on some of these questions (I wouldn’t be qualified to offer answers – I’m just asking the questions).
