so, I am trying to popularize the use of "inter-objectivity".

Inter-subjectivity is "turtles of subjectivity, all the way down", but via group process, facts become institutionalized.
For example, democratic processes of voting are intersubjective, because there need be no other justification than opinion.

Inter-objectivity, on the other hand, occurs when a phenomena is greatly overspecified- there are objective reasons to do things, but there are more options than can be "optimized" into a singler objective decision.

For example, consider the design of a suburban home. There are a short list of exemplary designs that make the best use of space, energy, and other priorities. There are not INFINITE configurations worth a damn. But there are more than one. There are hundreds.
Which among the few hundred best suburban home designs will get used?

A manager is someone who arranges, or re-arranges, configurations strategically. For example, suburban development companies compete to create the best configurations of homes that fit the plots of land. The managers of these projects must also consider the market fads and popular tastes at the time the homes are originally built. All in all, what the real estate managers do is strategically use "inter-objectivity" to align the best possible configurations with the momentary market demand.

Thus, inter-objectivity lies between optimization sensemaking (objectivity) and subjective sensemaking (inter-objectivity) on the spectrum of social construction processes.

In short, managers utilize "tiny acts of management", which are a repertoire of cognitive actions for creating configurations (inter-objectivity).

Thanks for sharing this. I read the abstract with interest. Look forward to reading the whole paper. Would definitely like to explore this further at some point.

The inter-objective description of managers versus intersubjective description of bosses was especially intriguing. Are you using these terms in a quasi-Wilberian quadrant way?

Best,

Gregg

Gregg,

I wanted to mention that my mentor Barry Mitnick and I have started an inquiry into "What cognitively counts as a manager".

We have been working on this for a few years.

here is our 2019 conference proceedings on a new ontology of management>

Hi TOK Folks,

I thought this infinite marble loop was weird:

If there are physicists that see this, I would appreciate clarity on why this is not a case of a perpetual motion that could be used to generate a perpetual motion machine. Just glancing at it seems like it might be (i.e., that there is energy that could be syphoned off here to do work indefinitely), but that would violate the second law, and so clarity on that point would be helpful to me. It made me wonder if the system is not closed because of gravity but that seemed weird to me at some level.

Best,
Gregg

PS In case anyone missed it, the subject line is in reference to a post I just made about “observing human mental behavior” as I am always hammering home the importance of specifying the kind of behavior we are interested in.
