Yes, thank you, Eva. Not only was Joan's research groundbreaking but her 1985 Signs article raises incredibly thoughtful and difficult questions about research interpretation, ethics, and politics.

Thanks for sending this Eva. It is very sad. Her work was wonderful.
I remember hearing her speak at least once. Did we have her come to FEAST?

Joan was a colleague of mine at Stony Brook. It was their obstinate (and I can say it now ) thick headed adherence to productivity and scholarship standards, which failed to recognize her and potential genius that prevented this infectiously wonderful teacher, colleague and scholar to be fired. I was a powerless young assistant professor with 0 clout at the time--were I able I would have fought tooth and nail to retain her. In the end, they did her a favor, because it allowed her to pursue a topic that was of burning interest to her and to me (both my mother and father were Holocaust survivors) and to the world. It was our loss, but a gain for humanity. I will always remember her laughter, her passion and her human warmth. Susan Bordo, Joan and I would hold forth long and hard on feminist topics. I learned so much from those talks. It is a sad day, but a proud one because of this wonderful obit.
