Rachel,

Here was my reply to Bonnitta (cc’ing John)…
(FYI, both are considered part of the TOK Society, but they both dropped off the list because of the email flood and their busy lives)…
G

Bonnitta,

Along these lines, you might enjoy this video of a hydra eating a sand flea.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCPmaCYoI-M

For me, the sand flea represents the shift into the Mind plane more completely. That is because it has a complex active body, a centralized nervous system and a clear sensory-motor looping structure. So we can go from organisms like fungi at Life into Trichoplax into hydra (in between Life and Mind) into sand flea (very base of Mind).

No specific dividing line per se, but with coordinated movement with a complex active body and a centralized control system we see a new complex adaptive dimension mediated by novel information processing – macroscopically behaving – communicating – participating systems…which is the complexity building feedback that gives rise to the Mind plane of existence on the ToK.

Best,
G

Does trichoplax have Mind or proto-Mind? The "flocking" behavior of the cilia seems to be a weaker emergence than the orthogonal turn between ToK planes. Oh the wonder...

Hi TOK Folks,
A few weeks ago I received this great 6 min video from Bonnitta Roy. It is a great example of the space between Life and Mind on the ToK System:
