I was an external reviewer for this dept (pre-covid). They have some interesting and nice younger faculty there. And the CSU campuses all are in dire need of faculty members from underrepresented groups.  I should also add that Fullerton is in commuting distance (at least by So Cal standards) from beach areas, e.g., Long Beach and nearby, if that sweetens the pot for anyone. Even in very hot weather the beaches tend to remain wonderfully cool. And although we have fires and earthquakes, we don't have annual hurricanes.

About the Department of Philosophy

The mission of the department is:

  1. To advance an understanding of and appreciation for the importance and value of well-founded knowledge and rigorous intellectual inquiry.
  2. To develop and promote argumentative and analytic skills essential for good reasoning, efficient communication, and the preservation of high standards for knowledge claims.
  3. To examine and critically assess normative standards governing social relations, practices, and institutions, including a wide range of human activities dependent upon value judgments.
  4. To deepen and encourage students’ understanding and life-long pursuit of the uniquely reflective activity of philosophical inquiry.

The Department of Philosophy is engaged in several student retention projects and high-impact practices to support student graduation and success. For example:

    • Annual Philosophy Symposium: this unique, exciting, free event is entering its 51st year. It brings together internationally renowned speakers on specific philosophical topics (selected by the faculty coordinator, a rotating position), with CSUF undergraduate students who comment on their papers before an audience of faculty (from various disciplines/institutions), current students, alumni, and members of the public.
    • Active philosophy club: each year our Philosophy Club organizes events such as reading groups, movie nights, guest talks, discussion sessions, alumni events, and promotional/recruitment events. They also take the lead in organizing the symposium, under the faculty coordinator’s supervision.
    • Colloquia: the department sponsors visiting speakers at least once per semester and faculty within the department also present papers to an audience of students, fellow faculty, alumni, and members of the public.
    • First-Gen Philosophy Group: builds community around shared, first-generation student identity, connects students to campus resources, guides students through the often confusing college landscape, and reflects philosophically on first-gen student identity and experience.

We seek a colleague that can build on these efforts and contribute innovative practices and strategies for further promoting student success.
